Given the majority of her songs have been upbeat bops or smooth R&B jams, it may come as a surprise that Sabrina is channeling her inner Adele for her upcoming fifth studio album. In a recent interview with Billboard, Sabrina revealed she wondered how Adele created “these gut-wrenching records. And I [just became] so fascinated with that... like, ‘Damn, I just need some of whatever Adele was drinking!' And… then I got it. It was super-eye-opening, and I am grateful for it all. But it's still tricky to navigate.”
Perhaps it's not so hard to imagine what an Adele-esque Sabrina Carpenter song could be like, given how heartbreaking the intro to her next album will be. With her on this journey into artistic maturity is JP Saxe and Julia Michaels, whom you may know from their 2020 hit single "If the World Was Ending." Sabrina revealed that over half the album was written alongside these two songwriters.
Sabrina also shared that this album will mark a departure from her previous work, due to it focusing more on the emotional pain she has gone through in the past year. Her main goal for the album is to make it more personal, also shockingly revealing that she was pressured by her previous management team at Hollywood to release certain songs as singles against her own wishes. “The amount of times that I really believed in a song? Those weren't the songs that had music videos.” Sabrina elaborates.
She also felt that her former label encouraged her to rush the creation of her music, to the point where songwriters she worked with did not have time to truly understand what she wanted in her music.
Sabrina also gives us an insight into one of the songs on the album. She refers to this song as a mixture between psychedelic rock and rhythmic pop.
Another song that fans believed would be on the album, "Skin," is increasingly sounding like it may have just been a non-album single. The song was never intended as a lead-up to her fifth album. “When I wrote the song, I don't know if I anticipated it being heard -- which is probably why it came from a much more truthful place.” Sabrina informs us. When asked for comment about the song, Sabrina said she would never reveal what it was truly about and that she was a "private person."
No release date has been provided at this time, but it will be interesting to see what the album is about and hopefully it will come out soon!
