"Why" is a song described by Sabrina Carpenter to be very conversational in nature. In an interview, Sabrina said that once she wrote the first line (in March 2017), the rest of the song wrote itself naturally. In another interview, she explained the inspiration behind the song:"'Why' is a question we seem to pose daily, so there are multiple meanings within the song that are up to interpretation. We don’t necessarily need to be the same, to love the same. Sometimes differences can hold us together and I think that’s a beautiful sentiment to how we deal with divergence and how it can furthermore prove our compatibility. In the end, we don’t really need to know 'why' if we are confident in our own emotions."
The music video (directed by Jay Martin) was shot in New York City on June 20, 2017 and premiered a month later on July 21, 2017, featuring Casey Cott of Riverdale fame. The song's chorus features a chopped beat, which was a musical style that had recently rose to popularity in EDM songs such as Zedd's "Stay" and Kygo's "It Ain't Me." "Why" peaked at #27 on the Mediabase Pop Radio airplay chart (one spot above the previous record of #28 for "Thumbs"). The song is not on any album, except on the Japanese version of Singular Act I.
