It's been a few weeks since "Skin," and my respect for Sabrina has unfortunately not grown anymore. She's had a number of responses now, including one with Ryan Seacrest and the Zach Sang Show, but all of them have been mostly shallow responses such as "If you listen to some of the words I'm saying, you'll know what I mean." I guess my main criticism right now is I just don't understand why she would release a song but then be like "Oh, but I can't talk about it! Teehee!" whenever she's asked if the song is a diss track or not. She needs to either apologize or stand by her actions. If she chose to stand by her diss track, she could perhaps talk about how deeply the situation affected her and why she chose to release it. Simply teasing people and repeating the line "It's not about one person" isn't going to cut it, because it obviously is about one person when she directly references the blonde line and includes the "he's all my skin" lyric. If it's not about person, perhaps tell us what else it's about? She wouldn't even need to be super personal, rather she could just explain what those two aforementioned lyrics above that everyone's talking about mean in a general sense, since they both sound incredibly specific. She really needs to take her own advice, given she included the lyric "Maybe then we could pretend there's no gravity in the words we write." There's gravity in those two lyrics because they sound so incredibly specific, so she needs to address them in a more substantial way than repeating "it's not about one person" like a broken record. As Dan from the Zach Sang interview said, "Sabrina, you're so good at answering a question without saying anything!" This perfectly sums up what she's doing, because she's responding to the controversy without saying anything. It's not about "saying what (we) want to hear" like she's complaining the Sang interview. The song has caused a considerable amount of controversy and hate, so it's her responsibility to address this, either defending herself or apologizing, instead of delighting in teasing her fans and stoking the fires.
I realize I've done a lot of posts on this now, but this is something that's really affected me as a Sabrina fan and makes me not want to be a fan of her anymore if she's going to be so petty. The Sabrina I originally fell in love with would never tease fans in such a cruel way when her song has already caused a lot of controversy and uncalled for hurt. It makes me think back to November, when I posted an article about how the new Sabrina content wasn't quite as good as the old EVOLution era...if only my poor November self knew how much worse it could be lol. It should be really interesting to listen to her track with Joshua Bassett, "We Both Know," coming out in the beginning of March, as well as see what she apparently has planned for April 23 according to an Easter Egg the video for "Skin." Until then, I guess I'll continue kind of being on a rollercoaster of whether I want to continue being a fan of Sabrina or not.
