My Interpretation of Sabrina's Response to "Skin"

Since the release of her track "Skin" on Friday, there has been a lot of drama surrounding Sabrina's decision to write a diss track about Olivia Rodrigo (you can read more about that here). Two days after the song's release, night, Sabrina responded to the controversy on her Instagram account.

She begins the response saying she was "not bothered by a few lines in a (magnificent) song."She continues, revealing she was at a tipping point and wanted to write something which she wanted to tell herself in the past. She claims "a lot of people were trying to get to me."

Sabrina then totally denies responsibility, saying "some lines address a specific situation, while other lines address plenty of other experiences I have this year." This is where her response begins to get frustrating. Sabrina takes no responsibility whatsoever for the drama she has caused. It's more than a coincidence "Skin" was released just days after "Drivers License," so being super vague about things does not help the situation at all.

She also claims "it also shows that many things have actually gotten under my skin." Umm...alright? This is so vague and comes across as shallow. The sentiment afterwards about not giving people power over your feelings is kind of nice, I guess, but I don't understand why Sabrina felt the need to respond to the controversy if she wasn't actually going to say anything. Many of her sentiments, especially the ones quoted in this post, come across as meaningless fluff and do not actually address the situation.

Sabrina could have responded in a number of ways: defending what she had done, explaining her feelings of frustration around being potentially mentioned in a #1 song, or even better, taking some responsibility and apologizing for the hate her song created. She does none of these things. Instead, she pleads "please do not take this as an opportunity to send more hate anyone's way." Sabrina's song is very hateful and punitive towards Olivia, and arguably made this drama blow up way more than it was before Sabrina had made the song. Yes, there were internet rumors about Sabrina being the "blonde girl" in Olivia's song, but the majority of it was just internet trolls whom Olivia does not have any responsibility for. Sabrina only made it way worse by basically confirming that the "blonde girl" lyric was about her, and blowing the drama way out of proportion by making a song about it.

The bottom line is: if Sabrina wanted to address the controversy, she needed to apologize for the hate that stemmed instead of denying any responsibility for a song that was obviously about Olivia, due to both the lyrical content and the time it was released.

I'm really hoping this doesn't outpeak her other songs, on radio or the Billboard Hot 100, but I really fear it will. Here's hoping it won't.
