Emails I Can't Send Controversies

Sabrina's new album 'Emails I Can't Send' has only been out for less than a couple of days, and it already has some controversies. The largest of the controversies centers around Julia Michaels. On Friday, a fan tweeted online that they liked Sabrina's new album, but didn't care for Julia's writing. Shockingly, Julia responded this post with a very petty post saying "I thought you hate the way I write, cuz fyi I wrote f***ing all of these!" Almost immediately afterwards, Julia deleted her entire Twitter account. This has caused fans to wonder if Julia secretly ghostwrote all of the songs, because she is only credited for six. In my opinion, this was very unnecessary of Julia to call out a random fan like this. I will admit there are certain aspects of Julia's writing (the talk-singing) that I am not the biggest fan of either, and there is no reason for her to attack everyone who doesn't like the way she writes. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes, and that is okay.

In addition, Sabrina has put out some controversial merch. Based on the lyric from "Because I Liked a Boy," Sabrina released a t-shirt that reads "I'm a homewrecker" with "I'm a slut" on the back. Some fans feel this was a bit tone-deaf on her part. I personally feel that putting a sentiment like that on a shirt would be better with context. Few people are going to wear a shirt saying they are a homewrecker, since it's not particularly a word that can be taken back like "slut" or "bitch"can. While I don't know if Sabrina objectively did anything "wrong," it does feel a bit gimmicky or that she made these shirts for the shock value, which detracts from the heartbreaking message of "Because I Liked a Boy." The song conveyed the message of how harmful these words were to her mental health, but I'm not sure the solution is to take back the word "homewrecker." Being proud of being a slut posits that you're proud of your sexuality, but "homewrecker" is a very charged term and "wrecking homes" (or relationships) isn't really something to brag about in my opinion.
