Back in January, Sabrina Carpenter fans were on the edge of their seats when a Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter duet was announced for release on March 5, due to the Sabrina/Joshua/Olivia Rodrigo drama. Because there was so much drama, Joshua chose to pull the song from his album and not release the duet, replacing it with another song, "Telling Myself." Things have obviously calmed down a bit since, and Sabrina has revealed she was going through some difficult family issues involving her father cheating on her mother (not that very many people seem to have noticed, or attributed it to why Sabrina may have written "Skin").
The song will likely never be released now, due to how explosive the drama became. In an interview with Billboard, Joshua stated: "I didn’t want my EP to be overshadowed by some other narrative that people were trying to make. I really want the focus to be on the art instead of some of the talk and the chatter."
He also vaguely stated that there is a small possibility the song could be released in the future. "You shouldn’t live to please everybody, but at the same time, there are ways to be sensitive to situations where maybe [“We Both Know”] has a better chance at a different time." Joshua shares.
However, an unfinished version of the song was leaked, featuring only Joshua and Sabrina's vocals without any instrumental elements. I've linked the video above.
For what was supposed to be such a controversial song, I honestly found it quite lackluster. It's a very generic love song and there's not much more to say about. I do think some of the lyrics sound a bit immature, including "You came to tell me it's over, so then how'd we end up in my bed?" It seems very teenage dramaish, at least to me.
While the song was certainly not as shocking as people thought it would be, I'm honestly glad they didn't release this. The song was quite bland and really had nothing going for it. Now that Sabrina and Joshua seem to be no longer romantically involved, I can't imagine the full song will ever be released.
(As a note, I don't plan to add "We Both Know" to the listing of Sabrina's music on this site, since it was not fully finished and likely will never be)
